Installing an Irrigation System

It is a very low-cost way of keeping your plants healthy. It is important to remember though that home irrigation systems need to be designed by a professional in order to operate at maximum efficiency.
Large-scale Irrigation Controllers
The controller can also be programmed to switch on the water at night in order to minimise water loss, and who gets wet. It also can be set to switch on different areas at different times, This can even-out the water demand, so mains pressure is not put under stress.Rain sensors can also be installed as part of the system, the controller can be programmed to stop irrigation or miss a cycle completely.
Distribution Zones
Irrigation systems are divided into areas or zones. In practice, a zone is a single irrigation valve and from that goes a pipe to sprinklers or a set of drip lines. Most small residential irrigation systems have just one zone, but a larger house can have more zones depending on requirements or restrictions. Commercial systems can have a dozen or more zones. Water is usually shifted about with pipes and hoses. Typically pipes are ‘in-ground’ which means they are buried out of sight, protected from damage.
Sprinklers and Drip Lines
These ‘in-ground’ sprinklers have internal pistons so when no water is being used the heads are at ground level, this way no one falls over them and lawnmower travel harmlessly over them.When water pressure is applied, the piston expands and the sprinkler head emerges for use.
A sprinkler delivers water through the air and is used when a larger area needs to be watered such as grass or a large bed of flowers. Best not to use on a windy day though as the water may be blown onto passers-by.
Drip lines are used by placing the hose along the ground, if possible then covered with mulch for aesthetic reasons. The cost per plant is higher, but there are no spray or drift problems, and water wastage is much lower.
